Super Water-Repellent Furoshiki NAGARE

A product by School of Design Assistant Professor Jun Ito was included in the "Japanese Design Today 100 <renewal version>" exhibition held between June 30th (Thu) and August 19th (Fri), 2016 at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila (Philippines).

"Japanese Design Today 100 <renewal version>," organized by the Japan Foundation, focuses on product design (furniture, household appliances, stationery, tableware, clothing, medical products, vehicles, etc.) in an attempt to not only showcase modern trends and characteristics in Japanese design, but also to present Japanese culture as it is today. The exhibition features 89 examples of design created 2010 or beyond and 11 pieces from the post-war modern design era that heavily influenced present day Japanese design.

The same product was also featured in the "DESIGN for SUMMER" exhibition held between July 4th to August 8th, 2016 at GOOD DESIGN Marunouchi (Yurakucho, Tokyo), a communication platform owned and operated by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion.

Product name: Super Water-Repellent Furoshiki NAGARE Manufactured by: ASAKURA SENPU CO., LTD.
(Assistant Professor Jun Ito serves as brand director of the product)

Product overview:
The Super Water-Repellent Furoshiki NAGARE is an evolved "water-repellent wrapping cloth" made with an original "dewelry?" treatment developed by Asakura Senpu, a textile company dating back to 1892. The technology is also used in the swimwear of top athletes, but was originally developed to be used for baby diaper covers, and is a fusion of traditional Japanese culture and the latest technology. Praised both domestically and internationally to "successfully incorporate distinctive super water-repellent properties into the old-fashioned, recyclable wrapping that is furoshiki to create an ideal product," the product received the 2011 Good Design Award of Small and Medium Enterprises, a special award category for the 2011 GOOD DESIGN AWARDs, as well as the Good Design 2011 award, the world's longest running awards program of its kind from the U.S.A., and an "honourable mention" for the "Red Dot Award: Product Design 2013," commonly cited as the most globally prestigious award available.
